Hi can anyone give me advice about my horsefield tortoise, i took her to the vet today as she has lost 3oz in weight over the last month. He told me she is a bit heavy and needs to have a scan done as she might be egg bound. i have had her for about 5 years and i think she is about 14 years old. in all the time i have had her she has not layed any eggs

Hi
I have heard of someones tortoise who after  4 yrs of being taken away from a male tortoise laid eggs, so I guess it is possible. Some of the signs of egg bound  are straining to pass something but nothing happens, back legs not working properly, trying to nest, has yours shown any sign of doing this? I do think that you need to get her X-rayed to be sure, because it can be quite serious if she is egg bound. Normally they give oxytocin to help pass the eggs and warm baths which help, so don't worry too much, the main thing is finding out what is wrong and then it can be dealt with. You are dealing with what is wrong very quickly so it should be sorted out quickly.
Let us know how you get on
