Do tortoises carry salmonella like turtles do, my daughter in law is concerned

Hello there. According to my reading, many reptiles, lots of hen's eggs, and a quarter of all metal coins, when tested do carry salmonella bugs. If you use proper hygiene procedures, you need not fear salmonella. I have no intention of stopping handling money, eating eggs, nor keeping tortoises. In over 40 years of tortoise keeping, I have not yet been stuck down. I do use anti-bacterial soaps and sprays, and ensure thorough cleanliness of containers and hands. I always advise caution and sensible measures. Even 40+ years ago my mum made me use disinfectant on my hands to ensure I was relatively germ-free as a young tortoise enthusiast. Hope this helps allay some of your fears.  Regards David nr York
