Tortoise nearly drowned Posted: 22/08/2010 by lizzieg |

Hi, Tortie had a nasty trauma this week and was found in pond ( not normally accessable as gate to pond normally shut and secure) He seemed fine, dont know how long he was in there, put him back in to his normal patch, ( he has the run of lovely walled garden) but after 4 days,I found he has white spot on eye and is not eating much- vet says maybe get a heat light for him which I have now done but trying to put him in confined area in a summerhouse has upset him and still will not eat, is it worth persisting with heat lamp? Help please, Lizzie

Lizzie you are so lucky not to have a dead tortoise! I thought you might be interested in a tale I read years ago about a tortoise and a pond. Basically what I remember is that a tort owner lost his tort and eventually found it in the pond...limp and lifeless. They were of course devastated and buried the poor creature in the garden. Imagine their shock, when several days later the soil covered tort ambled onto the lawn to sun itself! Anyway I cannot help you other than to say fit a self-closing mechanism on the gate, plus... nail a step over board across the aperture! Good luck and let us know what transpires. David in York
