Inactive tortoise with white rings around eyes
Posted: 14/06/2010 by bangormark1

We are new owners & got 2 hermann torts (with license) from a pet store.

They are 9 & 10 months old.

Since we got them 1 has always been more active than the other, but now in the last couple of days the 'quiet' 1 doesn't seem to move much or eat very much. I also noticed white coloured rings around his eyes.

We will take him to the vet but I just wanted to know if any1 has any pointers what could be wrong?

We have done all what we were told to do by the pet store & taking tips from your website + forum (housing, feed, bathing, vits etc...)

If these look like puffy swollen eyelids, it is likely to be a vitamin deficiency. Probably A and D vitamins. For many eye problems I keep on recommending cod liver oil, I have used it successfully for 40 years, long before all the fancy stuff we can now buy.. A drop on the tongue every day for a week often gives good results. If you cannot open torts mouth, wait til he is warm and hungry and apply a drop to small piece of favourite food. Don't put on first piece...be sneaky and wait till he is in a scoffing routine, then slip him the spiked food, by hand.

If it is the actual eye which has a white ring then I have no ideas at all. Let us know how things work out, good luck.   David in York
