Very Sleepy Tortoise
Posted: 08/06/2010 by leburge

Hi All

Hope you are all well. Im new to tortoise owning and my 2 are 10 months old Spur Thighed. I have one very active tortoise and one that sleeps all day and all night. They both eat well and are gaining weight nicely and when i let them outside they both seem to love it but the one that is sleepy seems to run and find a corner to sleep in no matter where she is. I know they can do this leading up to hibernation but surely not this time of year ?!?! All conditions are correct and they both have a varied diet with nutrobal.

Any ideas ?!?! hope she isnt depressed

Hi Lee, I wouldnt think the tort is winding down for hibernation, but if they are too hot they can aestivate which is the summer version of hibernation, but in this country I would think it was unusual.  If as you say he is eating, drinking and toileting ok it may be that its happy just resting/basking.  You could send a poo sample off to have it checked for worms, as a worm burdon can make them lethargic.

Let us know how you get on, regards Vivienne
