Worming and Panacur
Posted: 02/06/2010 by DavidWYork

I always used to use Systamex as a drench, to worm my torts each year. I have now purchased Panacur 2.5% oral suspension. I am confident at tube feeding and rehydrating torts badly in need of fluids. If I weigh torts accurately...are there any snags in giving Panacur to adult torts? Do I simply follow charts for small  animals...or do I need to adjust dosages??

Hi David,

I tend to use 3ml/kg of tortoise.
Panacur is apparently well known for it's toxicity, though I've never had any problems using it here.

Our veterinary surgeon who specialises in tortoises says you should never worm your tortoise unless you see worms and then you have to have those worms analised because if they are not the worms that panacur kill, you are wasting your time.  Furthermore, he says that worming a tortoise lowers their immune system.
