Eaten a Scindapsus
Posted: 10/04/2010 by ceilismyth@hotmail.com

Hi,

My 4yr old Herman's Tort was having a wander when I noticed he/she was chewing on a trailing Scindapsus plant.
This is a poisonous plant to cats etc... Apparently they will vomit but will not be fatal.
What should I do? Can anyone advise?

Hello there,

From what I have been able to find, the toxicity of this plant in relation to tortoises is due to the oxalate content. Oxlatates inhibit the absortion of calcium but a a one off is unlikely to cause problems. Make sure the tortoise stays well hydrated, a daily bath in shallow warm water will help with this. If you do see anything of concern in your tortoises behaviour, contact a vet, just as a precaution but I don't think this one off will cause problems personally.
