Worms
Posted: 14/01/2010 by chestersmum

Hi everyone, I have had my tortoise chester for just over a year now. I just bathed him and hour or so ago and after he had been to the toilet (Poo!) I thought it was hard urine hanging out of his back end. On further investigation it appeared to be a large worm (off whitish in colour) still allive and very big. I have never had this before. I have an appointment at the vets with him tomorrow morining but was wondering if anyone had any advice for me or any idea what type of worms this is. I haven't noticed any other and I am now quite concerned. He has not been off his food and no change in behaviour.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi Chestersmum,  I am in Egypt but had the same thing...more than one large whiteish worm coming out live!! I know its an awful sight and scary but the vet told me that the worm has reached its full adult size when it comes out like that! so be prepared for many many more. After mine were wormed and in their morning soak first of all there were lots of the big ones followed by eggs. The second worming which was only a week ago I seen smaller pinkish worms, I will leave it another six weeks and then repeat it. I am sure your tort will be fine ( maybe a bit lighter when he gets rid of those horrible things!! I am sure your vet will sort him out nicely.  I first noticed this after my torts had eaten a little cauliflower so wormed them ! Good luck.

Kind Regards Tara

Hiya,

I don't suppose you have any photos have you?
We always recommend a stool sample be taken when you take on a new tortois, especially if it has come from a pet shop or the likes, as they are not always visible to the naked eye. As Tara has said best to take it back for a further treatment, or a stool sample check.
