Is overwintering harmful?
Posted: 21/11/2009 by kerryjcarl

Does overwintering pose any health problems for a tortoise in the short or long term? Am overwintering both mine and am wondering if it will cause a problem for them, am not doing it for any particular reason either, I thought one was underweight and have never hibernated them before, was told by a pet shop not to, until they reached 8 yrs but I know different now.  Am a bit of a chicken really, because it sounds complex.

Hi, no over wintering doesnt cause any problem to the tort, as long as you keep the heat and light at the right temps they will carry on as normal, they do often slow down as its a natural instinct to do so.  But if you have any concerns or have only just acquired them then its ok to over winter and build up a record of their weights next year.Click and drag me down to the editor
