SOFT SHELL
Posted: 15/11/2009 by Naomi

Hi,

I have just recently noticed that my tortoises shell feels quite soft. Is the normal as he is only a juvenile tortoise?? If not is there anything I can give him to make it stronger??

Hi Naomi,

A tortoise's shell is quite soft initially but will harden as time goes on providing he/she is supplied with the correct husbandry; slow growth, sufficient calcium and vitamin D3 (preferably in the form of a good quality UVB lamp, supplemented by oral vitamin D3/calcium (eg Nutrobal).

There are species specific care sheets here which will hopefully help:-

Follow this link and look in the left hand column for the species your tortoise is.
