This is just to let everyone know the benefits of moving a tortoise into the correct housing and giving the correct diet.  Previously my 2 hermanns lived in a viv, until, that is, I found out how very wrong it was, I had noticed from the beginning that my oldest had some "give in the base of his shell, when it was pressed and even though I knew nothing about tortoise health I sensed that this was not right, I vowed to keep an eye on it and ensure it did not worsen.   6 weeks ago I moved my tortoises from a viv into an indoor guinea pig cage complete with substrate and a megaray lamp and fed only weeds to them (previously it was cabbage and all the wrong things) I also put them outside during the day as much as possible and in that time alone his shell has gone rock hard as it should be!
