Don't understand
Posted: 06/10/2009 by kerryjcarl

Hi, have just tried to work out my torts weight ratio for the first time, and have broke out in a sweat, just do not understand the formula.

Charlie is a hermanns and is 5 yrs old 13.5cm and 500g

Chaplin is a hermanns and is approx 3 yrs old 13cm and 325g.

Can anybody help with this if possible please?

How are you meauring them? If you are measuring over the top of the shell, then that could be the problem.

The measurement you need is the plastron length.

1. place a piece of paper on the floor right up against the wall/skirting board

2. place the tortoise on the paper and gently push the tortoise closer to the wall, so that his /her head goes inside the shell, and the front of the shell is touching the wall/skirting board

3. with a pen or pencil, mark the paper immediately behind the tortoise

4 measure this length, from the edge of the paper where the tortoises head was to where the mark is.

5. Use this measurement with the graph.
