Male Sulcata (Henry) - Essex - requires a new home
Posted: 08/08/2009 by TPGDarren

We are looking for a home for a male Sulcata appx 6 years old. This species requires both a large outdoor area and large heated indoor accommodation for cooler days and over-wintering. Henry currently weighs appx 5-6 stone.
If you would like to offer Henry a new home, please contact the rehoming team at rehoming@tortoise-protection-group.org.uk with the email subject line 'Henry - Sulcata - Essex". Please do not apply through this forum. The rehoming application form can be found in the Rehoming Section of this website:-

http://www.tortoise-protection-group.org.uk/site/131.asp

you will need to download it into your documents, complete it and attach it to your email. If you experience any problems, please let us know, and if you have already completed an application, please let us know when you apply. Please note: There is no fee charged for re-homing but we hope that if you are successful in your application, you will consider adonation to help towards the TPG's work. Please be assured that any donation no matter how small will be spent working towards making a lasting difference to tortoises. Not all tortoises that we have rehomed in the past have required veterinary treatment, however occasionally this has occured, therefore as a non profitable group we rely on your generosity to help our cause.

Kindest Regards
Darren

Hi,

I have just read your post about Henry, i was wondering how big he is? And would he be ok to go out with our other tortoise, she is a red footed tortoise?

Also would we have to pick him up from his current location  ?

We are in Manchester.

Any info and photos you could send would be very helpful as we are very interested in this tortoise.

Many thnaks,

Sharon.

Hi Sharon,

I can imagine Henry is pretty huge if he weighs 5-6 stone. It would not be a good idea to put him in with a Redfoot as Sulcatas can be very aggressive.

Would it be possible to rehome Henry but keep him separate from our other tortoise ?

Sharon.

Hi Darren,  I would like to know how big Henry is please..  5 - 6 stone sounds huge !!!     I have one room spare in my house and a fair sized garden...  Roughly how much space would he need outside ???? ..... half an acre probably !!!!!    He is a big boy.  love from Marilyn. x

Hi Marilyn,

He really requires an outhouse with a basking area and a heat lamp & a UVB source. There is an awful lot to consider when taking on a Sulcata. Heating an area large enough to comfortably accommodate a Sulcata during the winter months can be very costly.

I'll drop the currect owner a line to find out the SCL

To see if a Sulcata is the tortoise for you, you should consider this 'reality check' follow the link and answer the questions http://www.turtlehomes.org/usa/test.shtml

Hello Darren,  Having read up on Sulcata's .. I'm not certain I would be able to afford the heat/light bills.   I have the space and enough love to adopt 20 torts......I'm just not very rich.....   I bet he's an absolutely gem as well....  love from Marilyn. xx    :o(
