Russian - Yorkshire
Posted: 16/05/2009 by tpgarlene

Hi

The TPG have been asked to find a home for a special Russian tortoise called George.  His owner contacted us as she felt that she was unable to care for him any longer, and was also worried that he wasn’t really eating.

George had apparently been kept in a viv, it was unclear whether he had a uv light, and may not have hibernated properly but had also spent a lot of time out in the garden over the years in warmer weather.  He was purchased from a pet shop approx 10 years ago, and is thought to be around 15 yrs old now.

George has spent the last few weeks with Helen as he did have some problems when he first arrived – a visit to Holly Hill vets confirmed that he had post hibernation anorexia, and he needed Baytril to treat a bubbly nose.  The good news was that the xray that was taken showed good bone density, clear lungs despite the bubbles and no bladder stones.

With dedicated nursing from Helen, he soon started eating, and his nose quickly cleared up.  We are now happy that he is ready to be rehomed, he is eating well, very lively and passing normal wee’s and poo’s.

George’s owner genuinely wanted the best for him, and would like to be able to keep in touch with whoever rehomes him, and receive updates and maybe the odd photo.   George is a handsome chap, Im having problems loading his photo at the moment, but will add one as soon as I can, and he weighs in at just over 400g.

If you would like to offer George a new home, please contact the rehoming team at rehoming@tortoise-protection-group.org.uk with the email subject line 'Russian/Yorkshire' - please do not apply via this forum. The rehoming application form can be found in the Rehoming Section of this website, you will need to download it into your documents, complete it and attach it to your email.  Any problems, please let us know, and if you have already completed an application, please let us know when you apply.

Please note: There is no fee charged for re-homing but we hope that
if you are successful in your application, you will consider a
donation to help towards the TPG's work. Please be assured that any
donation no matter how small will be spent working towards making a
lasting difference to tortoises. Not all tortoises that we have
rehomed in the past have required veterinary treatment, however
occasionally this has occured, therefore as a non profitable group we
rely on your generosity to help our cause.

Hi - we are having a few technical problems loading photos onto the forum, this will be fixed shortly, but in the meantime, you can see a photo of the very handsome George in the main rehoming section here:-

I would also like to say that the vet was at Holly House, not Holly Hill, apologies for that Click and drag me down to the editor

Hi Melanie,

Thanks for offering to rehome this tortoise.  I'm not sure why your emails are getting returned (they should be sent to:  rehoming@tortoise-protection-group.org.uk ).  I can confirm though that we do have an email from you sent on 17 May offering to rehome, so everything is OK.

Thanks for asking.  George appears to have made a full recovery and he is currently outside enjoying this glorious weather and feeding freely from the weeds in his outdoor enclosure.  Arlene is in the process of looking at the application forms as George is ready to go to his new home.

He is a charming littl gentleman and someone is going to be so lucky to have him.
