POO POO
Posted: 16/04/2009 by TUPPENNY

Just wondered if anyone has any ideas on this.
I've got a 6 year old female spur thighed.
She came out of hibernation about 6 weeks ago.
She seems o.k in herself..trotting about the garden, feeding well.
However, she is doing a sort of lumpy squishy poo and she smells a bit fishy around her rear!
Can anyone help with ideas on what this could be..CHEERS

Hi and Click and drag me down to the editor

Sorry for the late reply but we seem to have missed your posting somehow until I've just spotted it now.

I'm not sure why your tortoise is having smelly soft poos and you are right they shouldn't be like that.  For the first 6 - 8 weeks following a hibernation period the tortoises immune system is still fairly low and it is possible for any illnesses to show up during this period.  I am not saying that your tortoise is ill, but just pointing this fact out and suggesting that you monitor her carefully to make sure she isn't ill.

In order to get a better picture of what is going on can you tell us a little about how you are keeping her please?  You say she is trotting around the garden and feeding well.  Please can you tell us how much time she spends in the garden each day and what type of shelter and heat she is provided with.  Also let us know what type of food she is eating.  Have you seen her passing urine ?  Once we get a clearer picture we may be able to come back to you with some answers.

In the meantime I would encourage you to bathe her in warm water upto her chin for about 20 mins at least each day to make sure that she is well hydrated.
