LOL! It's amazing how devious we have to be to pull the wool over their eyes (or should that be 'hide the nutrobal in their breakfast') sometimes!

Why do you give them Nutrobal ? Is-it because you lack sun in the UK ?

Hi Tangerine,

Yes, are we are VERY lacking at the minute Click and drag me down to the editor, June has not been a good month.  Not only do we lack sun, the level of UVB is greatly reduced by the time it reaches us, so Nutrobal is recommended for hatchlings daily and 3 times a week for juveniles and adults.

Hope this helps

Jo

Hi Tangerine,

It is because we lack the sun. We have far fewer hours of sunshine in the UK than you do, plus our northern latitude means that the UVB from the sun is weaker in the UK. There is an interesting chart in the UV Guide UK, showing levels of UVB around the world, and you can see that the UK is towards the bottom (I think on this chart only Finland is worse :-(. Here is the link, but you might have to cut and paste it, because I can't post live links here with the browser I am using:

Easier to have torts where I live.

Wouldn't the answer be to have a green house with a Powersun to make up for the lack of sun in the North of Europe ?

Yes, it would -- but we don't like to make things too easy for ourselves {g}! Seriously, it is so much nicer if the tortoises can be outdoors as much as possible and get the natural UVB from the sun -- but it's not always easy in the UK.
