Eyes
Posted: 24/11/2008 by davesears

Ive just checked my 30 month old Herman Stig and his eyes are closed and swollen.

I have bathed his eyes but as Im getting ready to go on nightshift have no time to get him to the vets tonight.

We owned him and another for 10 months with no problems. No signs on the other tortoise.

Both live in a fully heated room, tortoise table, over head heater etc.

any advice is appreciated.

thanks

Hi Dave sorry to read this. Have you changed anything in the set up recently, or washed out the drinking bowls with a new product? Sounds like it may be an allergic reaction. I would bath him as normal and let him emerge his eyes in the drinking bath. I have read that you can use Hypromeliose for a tortoises eyes, these are artificial tears (you can buy them over the counter from any chemist) and will just keep the eye moist until you can get proper advice from your vet. This is such a sensitive area so I'd book your appointment tonight.

I honestly can't think what has caused it, with it being both eyes you would think allergy, one eye and it could have been scratched by the other tort. Sorry I can't be more positive about this Dave. Has anyone handeled him with perfume or aftershave on their hands or sprayed airfreshner ect near him? OK grasping at straws here. Please let us know the outcome.

Good luck
