Spur thigh tortoise needs help
Posted: 09/07/2014 by Gin

I have had the company of a male spur-thigh tortoise for about 30 years. Until 2 months ago he lived in the garden with my female Hermans. Sadly she died suddenly and since then my male seems to have lost interest in life. He will not come out of his house  and goes back in if I take him out. He isn't eating and I am getting very worried about him.

I would appreciate any advice.

Hello,

Sorry to hear about your Hermann's. Deaths of tortoises (other than imports) are rare, there is a slight possibility that there is a connection with the change in the male. Equally he could be missing his companion.

Have you had below average weather?

If there is no improvement in the next 3 or 4 days, I suggest that you visit a Specialist Reptile vet. Click on the "Vets & Health" box on the left to find the nearest.

Regards,
Tom
