crack in shell
Posted: 01/07/2013 by adie.k

Hi all you tortoise lovers.

Picking your brains again please. Today I noticed a small crack in the top of my hermans shell. She is around 4 1/2 years old and seems to be happy as a lamb. No problems eating and gets plenty of fluids and baths. Any advice would be much appreciated. I have ben to our local vet, but she is not a reptile guru by her own admission. If there are any recommends for vets in Warks, that would be very helpful too. Have a good summer.  Thanks in advance.

Also it seems to be in a tort table. Does it have a large outdoor enclosure ?

Hi Tom. Will do the picture again. In the photo, it shows the perimeter of the summer house. A remnant of days gone by, but handy to take the pics. There is an area about 100 m sq. To run around in, with about a fifth of it grass and planted with weeds to eat.

Hi Tom.

A close up picture of the crack. Hope you can make it out, right on the top of the shell.

I've looked at the 'blown up' pic & can't spot it. It's great it has all that space in the garden. It may just be a response to a peak in growth. I know you'll keep an eye on it.
If you ever need a vet (& not too far from Warks.) I strongly recommend Martin Whitehead, at Chipping Norton Veterinary Hospital.
Best wishes
Tom

Hi all.
Update on shell crack. As tom suggested, might have been a growth spurt. The crack appears to be closing now. All in the garden is good again. Thanks. Have a good summer. And remember to keep an eye on fluids in this hot weather.
