Female Hermann sores on neck
Posted: 27/04/2013 by Tonya

My female Hermann has two sore patches on either side of her neck. Not seen this before. Could be the male biting her. I have separated them but would appreciate advice on treatment and diagnosis if I've got it wrong.

Can you post some pics please? Also more details, their age sizes, weights, enclosure size & type, how long you've had them, anything else you feel is relevant please.
If these areas look infected , then veterinary advice should be obtained rapidly. Let's have the above info anyway please & we can try to assess & perhaps give a bit of husbandry advice.

I have had her for about 5 years, she is approx 6 years old and is indoors currently in a large enclosure with one other female and a male of similar age. They have hemp bedding, I only started using hemp last autumn. They are all kept outdoors from end of April, early May. They were hibernated and woke up early March. The sores are very recent on both sides of her neck and seem to be in the same place on each side. They are not weeping. She is eating and appears well. She is otherwise in good condition. They have heat and light during the day. Other two do not have the symptoms. she weighs 95 g and is approx 17cm. I am struggling to upload a pic. but will try. many thanks

It needs a vet check. Don't think it's a bite. Is the male aggressive ? If he is sexually active then separate him, the females are too young to allow to carry eggs.
When older always be aware of possible damage to the cloaca, from the boney tip on the males tail.
Best wishes

Thanks for the quick response. I will get her checked by a vet. I did not appreciate that they were too young to carry eggs, though having checked my certificate, it states she was hatched 2004. I bought her in 2007! She is Testudo hermanni hermanni, if that makes a difference. I am now worried I have unwittingly exposed her to harm by keeping her with a male. He is not aggressive but does chase and pester them! Needless to say I have separated them. Kind regards Tonya

Looks as though she came from a dealer (given the date 2004 etc) Don't worry he probably needs 'L plates'. Are they all from the same source ? Let me know where you got them & the Country of Origin on tomtortoise@btinternet.com please.
