Cloudy eyes
Posted: 17/03/2013 by sandra herron

I have a tortoise with a clouded over eye. A local vet gave me chloramphenicol eye drops. These have been used for 3 weeks , I was also advised to treat both eyes to reduce the chance of any infection passing to the other eye. There has been no inprovement in the affected eye and today I have noticed a cresent shape grey clouding in the other eye. Any advise would be much appreciated.

Is the tortoise fairly recently out of hibernation? You say clouded -do you mean covered in a whitish substance? Can you clarify please?

Hi Sandra,

In would take your tortoise back to a specialist reptile vet. It could be hibernation related. They can form a white membrane over the eye front when the weather is particularly cold, or it may be damage to the eye, again it could be temperature related. It's very difficult to tell and a good reptile vet should be able to advise you better.
