lighting heat mat
Posted: 18/01/2012 by tracey smith

Hi thanks for previous advice given on unexpected eeg arrival. I have been hooked on this site now and i dont think i have the correct set up for my hermans they live in a table which has a basking lamp and a heat mat and a cool area and sleeping compartment. I have made a tortoise garden area for them and they go out in the summer daily and i bring them in at night. After reading lots of posts i think maybe lighting is wrong, the breeder where i got them from recommended only basking and heat mat, light on daily from 8-6 and mat on continuously. please can i have a few pointers on what i should be doing? Thanks

Hi
Unfortunately as you are finding out, this is not the correct way to keep to your tort.Heat mats are a No No, the tort cannot get away to a cooler place, plus it ferments the food and causes over growth, so I would remove that straight away.
You need UVB light and heat and the easiest way to provide that is with a combine light, Arcacia or solor power see. Have a read of the care sheet under the link "The Tortoise" that will explain what you need to be doing. What housing and substarte do you have?

hi jane i looked at link for light i saw a mega ray 100w self ballasted, does that sound correct for my herman she is 9. Do i just put that on in the day from 8-6? what about at night? And do you recommend having a digital thermometer attatched also if so what temp am i looking at? I went to pet shop and they appeared to try to sell me every product there! Thanks for the advice
