Would Sidney like a friend?

Hi All

Do tortoises prefer to live in pairs? - I have a 8 year old male Horsefield Tortoise called Sidney.Click and drag me down to the editor

I have had him for 5 years and watched him grow - he is quite the chareter Click and drag me down to the editor

I know that male horsefield's can be quite aggressive towards other males, so if i was to get him a friend then it would need to be a lady.

I have guinea pigs and cats so he does have some company round the garden.

please can anyone advise if getting him a lady friend would be the right thing to do.

many thanks

I have only just joined the forum but from what I have read one female may get an awful lot of pestering from a male.

You are perfectly right Kissandra, the female would be pestered, they usually say one male to three females!!Click and drag me down to the editor
This is difficult one to answer as Tortoises are solitude animals by nature, but I have seen them quite happily living together with a group too. I think the factors you need to consider is 1- do you want a hatchling (which is not easy to sex) or 2- an adult so you know what sex you are getting and can plan your pens' etc.. also if they did fight would you have the room to seperate them?
