Posted: 19/08/2011 by sammy88

hi everyone,

im hoping someone can help me, ive got a beautiful little 2yr old horsefield but for the last couple of weeks hes been less active and ive noticed that one of his eyes is very watery and the other eye sometimes doesnt open at all. i give him regular baths which do usually help temporarily. he is still eating well, but its upsettin to watch because he clearly cant focus on his food well enough and ive found myself helpin him get it in his mouth. also he would usually wake up a couple of hours after i put his lamp on and speedily make his way to his food corner but lately he doesnt wake up until late afternoon. im so worried about him he means everything to me and i want my active little man back :( any help would be useful, i have heard about cod liver oil but wanted confirmation before i try anything on him, thank u , sammy (bentleys mum)

Hi,

I would have him checked by a vet. One possibilitity is that it may be an infection that needs antibiotics. Make sure you use a vet that has good knowlege of tortoises as most don't. Best to do this as soon as possible.

There is a list of specialist vets on this site. Good luck.

Hi
I agree with Doug, you need to get him checked out by a specialist vet. Most eye infections are easily treated if caught early. Can I ask what substrate you are using, it could be causing an irritation, and what lighting you have?

Jane
