Can't do it!
Posted: 11/08/2011 by Amyandesiotrot

Hi, I have had my tortoise since december and it seemed fine at first, until it started getting puffy. So i took it to a help thing and they told me to stop feeding it pellets, and i have. Ive stopped putting the heat lamp on and its been spending a lot of time in the garden. But i think its depressed or something, because since that day it has been not very active and whenever i put it in its tank it doesnt walk around anymore, its just always asleep. And when it sleeps its head flops to the floor instead of staying in its shell. Im really worried about it and just dont know how to look after it properly. I might give it away..

Oh, and it seems to have something wrong with its eyes because s/he keps taking really hard, long blinks which is not normal.

Torty sounds very unhappy...I would seek vet help if possible. Where  are you? (Town, don't post address)There may be a member of this group who might be able to contact you and offer assistance and put you on the right track. Tortoises can be ill for ages, and by the time symptoms show, can be in a very serious state. You certainly need someone to look him over. It might in your case, just be that some simple change of conditions would improve things...his food, warmth or habitat/set up. Do not despair. You are bothering to seek help, and that is the first important step. Regards, David nr York

Is this anywhere near you? This is a recommended vet for torts. If too far away, I would ring them and ask if they know an "exotics" vet near where you live. Good luck. David nr York

Hi
I agree with Dave. This tortoise needs to see a vet now, we would be unable to offer any other advice apart from this, as the tort sounds poorly and needs a specialist opinion.
Unless you have been to the vets today, overnight I would keep him warm, quiet and well hydrated. Tanks are not good for tortoises, can you get as much ventilation in there without any draughts. please let us know how you have got on
Regards
Jane
