hot weather
Posted: 04/08/2011 by Bushby

HI all. My little man George is not moving about much in this hot weather. He seems to want to hide under weeds or behind his slate and sleeps most of the day, is this normal in the hot weather? I would have thought he would have loved it and be running around. He is eating and loves his daily baths.

Hi
Yes that is very normal, tortoise's will try to find some nice shady area and hide underneath and have a long sleep. In the wild the tortoise will astivate which is a state of dormancy lowering their metabolic rate. They do this to protect themselves from high temperatures and extreme heat. Always worth keeping an eye on them though just in case this is not the reason. Mine are very much like yours, and I am not worried
