Ok, I have just recieved this email from one of the breeder I contacted...

Hi Terri
I do have some horsfield hatchlings but they are still very small. I
have some hermanns too. They will be ready to go in around 6 weeks, if
I am happy that they are feeding and gaining weight satisfactorily. The
horsfield is relatively easy to keep so long as you bear in mind that
horsfields are essentially burrowing tortoises. By that I don't just
mean that they disappear underground overnight, but they actuall like
to have enough substrate to form a tunnel, so in that respect they are
not so easy as say hermanns or spurthighed tortoises. Most of the
horsfield tortoises that you see for sale, don't really look anything
like a wild horsfield, due to the way they have been kept and fed. In
the wild they only eat for 3-4 months of the year, so in captivity they
are usually grossly overweight.
Have a look at my website re horsfields www.tortsmad.com/russians.htm
and see if you could provide what they need. It's also worth noting
that they do far better outside and obviously this needs careful
planning to prevent the escape of this little digging tortoise. Hope
I've not put you off, but felt you needed to know the drawbacks
beforehand.
Hope this helps
Take care
Sue

Is this true?? I do have everything a tortoise needs and did read that horsefields dig a lot and like digging but I dont want to have to keep him/her outside all the time because of british weather isnt exactly the best weather so was hoping to let them out on nice days but keep them in over night and on not so good weather days. Is there digging this bad as even tho I have an enclosed garden, the could burrow underground and end up in next doors garden, would that be a issue?? could they doi that?? What do you think is best?? go for horsefield or research looking after a hermanns??, shes worried me now lol cus I wouldnt want to loose my tortoise :-(

Hi
That is good that the breeder is pointing out the need to build an escape proof pen, as horsfields are great diggers so you need to be prepared to reinforce the outside pen. This can be done easily by digging down yourself, and laying wire mesh or slabs down before putting all your soil back on top. The side could be build with breeze blocks, it is just making sure they can't get out. Having them indoors in their pen in the winter or on cold days is Ok you will just make sure that the substrate was deep enough for them to dig down, but as the breeder said, really all torts are much better being outside, weather permitting of course.
Hermans are what I have, they are an easy breed to keep too, you don't have the problem with them digging, and I find them very easy going. Have a read of the care sheets opposite and see what you think, at least you have a choice and both hatchlings will be ready at the same time. Quite exciting isn't it?

Maybe a hermanns would be better for me then because Ill be confident enough to know he/she cant dig to next doors garden lol and I dont think our garden is big enough for a horsefield if they do that, thank you for all your advice, its helped a lot. I have been researching them for months because i wanted everything right so know how outdoor enclosers should be and ill have to prepair all that before little one arrives but do feel i still have a lot a learn which now worries me about getting one as I dont want to do anything wrong, I want a life long healthy tortoise, seriously thinking a hermanns instead tho, Iv already read all of the care sheets for all the tortoises on this website lol, part of my research, i have the horsefield one more tho but think im gona read the hermanns again and print it out as think is better option for me, thanks from Terri

Hi Terri
Horsfields are full of character that is for sure, and forgot to say that they are brilliant climbers too...
Because you are preparing beforehand it will make life much easier when you get S/he. It will take a time to get your set up working for you and your lifestyle, I am still tweaking mine 5 yrs on, but once you have then they are pretty well easy to keep, the main thing is that you know what to feed them, housing/substrate and heat light UV to keep them healthy. Learning about them is fun too, I couldn't believe where my learning curves were taking me. Anyway have fun and look forward to your updates
Jane
