Help for newbee
Posted: 21/07/2011 by shari

Hi, i am now the owner of a mediteranean tortoise, having rescued it from a spanish family who thought it okay to allow their dog to chew on this little  lady, i know little or nothing about my new friend and want to do right by her, i took her to my vet last night who assures me she isn't harmed in any physical way just a bit like she has been sanded down, around the edges, with score marks to the top of her shell. obviously i know there must be some trauma with all the changes that have occured in the last 24hours, but she doesn't seem to be eating, i have presented her with red peppers yellow peppers, lettuce corgette and cucumber. All of which she turned her nose up except for a little of the red pepper, Today i have given her after reading on the net, spinach and parsley, as yet she still is not eating it. She also has a shallow large dish of water which i have placed her in a couple of times, which she clambered out of. We  will be endeavouring to make her a proper homely pen at the weekend, for the time being she is in an enclosed part of the garden with shade ans safety, as we also have a dog and two cats, they are inquisitive but no threat, as i do not encourage unsupervised visits, my dog is a very gentle soul although large who if anything will try to mother her. can you please give me any advice, i would be most grateful, thanxx   sharon

Hi Sharon
So glad you rescued this  tortoise. Are you living in spain? It was good that you took her to the vet to get checked over, it is amazing that she doesn't have an infection in the shellClick and drag me down to the editor
In one way it is good that she is not eating what you are offering as it is not a very good diet to offer, she needs weeds, dandelions, plantain, mallow to name but a few. here is a link that will help you to see what is safe and nutritional to give

also have a read on the care sheets on the left hand side, just click on "The Torotise"
Please come back with lots of questions, although you sound like you will be busy building this week-end but you may find some time
