What Age can Tortoises breed
Posted: 23/06/2011 by pauline01

Hi all, not been on here for a while as my tortoises have been happily growing.  I bought two babies three years ago.  Both should have been female but it soon became obvious that one was male.  The female has got to be almost twice the size of the male.

He is trying to mate with her.  She doesn't seem to be too bothered but at the same time she is not playing ball.  He seems to try it on when she is asleep.

My question is, are they too young?

Regards Pauline

Hi,

It's very quiet on here! My answer would be no, they should not be allowed to breed. I have two horsefield tortoises and the male is also showing signs of feeling fruity, so to speak. My female, like yours is having none of it. If you think about the size of the egg that the female is going to have to lay, it will give some idea of why they are not ready at your tortoises age to have babies.

Hope this helps

Hi please could you tell me at what age will a male start looking to mate. I have a lovely little male, but not sure of his age. This could give me some idea of his age, when he starts looking for a female..
