Just bought a combined light
Posted: 28/05/2011 by victoriataylor5

Hi, I just bought my baby Sidney a Herman's Tort a couple of weeks ago and today I have bought a combined light/heat/uv and was wondering what you thought? I have posted the blurb below. Thanks in advance. Vicky & Sidneyxx

Lucky Reptile Bright Sun UV Jungle 50W, BSJ-50

The Bright Sun UV Jungle was developed especially for reptiles from tropical and forest regions. It has a slightly lower UV performance than the Bright Sun UV Desert to account for the different conditions in the natural habitat of these animals. Branches and leaves in the forest will filter quite a lot of UV and the animals will not experience the full intensity of the sun. In addition it has to be considered that aboreal animals will usually have the ability to get quite close to a lamp inside a vivarium. Since UV radiation is potentially dangerous and the UV intensity is at 10 cm distance 5 times higher than at 30 cm, we have consciously reduced the UV output.

The spectrum was adapted to the natural conditions of forest regions. With 4000K the colour temperature is warmer than the daylight of the Bright Sun UV Desert. Tests have shown that tropical lizards like water dragons prefer the warmer light of the Bright Sun UV Jungle over the daylight of the Bright Sun UV Desert.
The warmer light of the Bright Sun UV Jungle will also promote the colours of plants causing a nice forest ambiance inside the vivarium.

Hi Vicky
I am hoping that someone with experience of light/heat will come in on this one, as I am abit doubtful that this is suitable for a tortoise, given that  the blurp is talking about tropical & desert species which Hermans are not they are mediteranean, and refer to lizards and water dragons. Tropical/Forest usually means high humidity which is not suitable for the meds. Also it mentions vivarium which usually refers to tanks ouch.....  Did the shop that you brought the lamp from know that you were buying it for a tortoise?
How are you housing your tort? if in a tank then make sure that you have plenty of ventilation. Personally I would remove the lamp and put a UV strip light in until I got more verification that this lamp was Ok to use. I am Mrs belt and braces so just erring on the side of caution

I have him in a tabletop and i have done a bit more research on the lamps and found that it is safe for use with Torts. He has had his light on for about a week and is a different tort, more active etc. His humidity is around 50/60% which I believe it ideal humidity for a tort. But any suggestions let me know.
