can I use straw?
Posted: 21/05/2011 by Bushby

HI all, Ive now finished Georges outdoor enclosure (promise to post pics tomorrow) but just wanted to ask; Inside his main home that is outside can I place some hay or straw inside the house to keep him warm? Is it safe for him. I know I can put in half sand half soil but just thought that hay or straw would be warmer.

thanks xx

Hi, the problem with hay is that when it becomes damp it starts to get mould spores forming on it, which can give the tort respiratory problems.  Straw is quite spikey and sharp which could harm torts eyes.

Best stick to deep soil to burrow in, not to worry about keeping them warm, as torts need the heat from the sun or a lamp to gently warm them up.
