Thin egg shells
Posted: 08/04/2011 by Ruperta

My tortoise just laid eggs for the first time (that I'[ve seen, as she was indoors at the time). There were 5 yolks and very thin, papery, broken egg shells. Does this mean there is not enough calcium in her diet? Or is it normal for a first clutch? She's 14 years old.

Sounds like calcium shortage to me...but calcium does need vitamin D to be metabolised, does she get UV lighting? Can you tell us more about her general upkeep? Do you supply calcium and mineral supplements regularly already? If yes, what, when and how much?
