Light and heating
Posted: 03/04/2011 by Lynn1

Hi there again.  I have read with great interest some of the advice given to tort keepers like myself on the subject of light and heat.  My previous tort the late Henry lived out for the whole time he was awake [March to October] and hibernated well for 40+ years.  Sadly died this year.  My new tort 'Toby' is a seven year old greek spur thigh and i gather has lived mostly indoors to this point.  All this is alien to me so i have reconstructed the late Henry's enclosure to make it more secure and also have an indoor table top [3' x 4'] using lots of wonderful ideas found on this site - thank you.  However i am totally lost with the heating/lighting thing.  I have been putting Toby in his outside enclosure for 3-4 hours a day and he is under his heat lamp in the indoor table top enclosure the remainder of the day time [unless it is nice and warm outside].  His eyes are 'dull' and he has had a vitamin D injection and i was then told i need to get a UVB or UVA !! lamp.   I need some directive on what combination light heat bulb, holder to buy including the wattage please and any other advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Lynn

Hi there,

The more time a tortoise spends in natural sunlight the better but due to out fairly poor (by tortoise stabdards) this isn't always possible and an artifical source is needed.

These bulbs provide good heat,UVB and some UVA light

It is worth contacting them to discuss the requirement, they're very helpful.
