help in worcestershire
Posted: 09/01/2011 by chollis

Hi I am a new member to this group.  I have a tortoise who was being overwintered in a heated cabin outside who unfortunately escaped on Boxing day into the run and was shut out accidently.  When I found him  under a large rock the following day I thought he was dead and only with perseverance managed to bring him round.  With admission to a local vets and treatment he has made actually in the circumstances a good recover and is improving except he is now in anorexic state and I am taking him to the vets for tubing of fluids and food.  I am not an experienced tortoise keeper and appreciate any help.  I have spoken to an experienced breeder today who has been fantastic giving me moral support and tips to get him going.  I am going to ask for an oesophageal tube I think it is called when I visit the vet tomorrow so that I can get fluids into him daily.  I am going away for 10 days mid February and I am concerned that this situation may not be resolved at that time.  I do not really want to leave him with the house sitter.  I wondered therefore if there was anyone who lives in the Worcestershire area who might be able to assist.  The name Darren was mentioned as someone who bred spur thighed tortoises and who might know someone?

Hi
I think it will be hard to find someone unless you have a very good friend who you can train up before you go. It is good that you are giving yourself time to sort this out before you go away. The only other solution but a costly one if possible, ask the vet if S/he can stay there vet?

Yes you might be right.  He has started to drink now on his own and has eaten a bit of tomato so has not had a tube fixed yet.  Fingers crossed he starts to fend for himself.

Hi
That is really good news that he has started to eat on his own, you can sigh a sigh of relief now. I can see that you are on another post with Darren, but just wanted to say I was pleased that your little one is making improvements
