Im confused !!
Posted: 16/08/2010 by shaz179

Hello all, im after some feedback. Ive got two hermanns torts both hatched Jul/Aug 2009. they have the same parents but the breeder told me there from different lots of eggs. There both eating well and one is smaller than the other.
When i look at other weights of people torts they all seem to be bigger than mine and sometimes there younger aswell. Should i be worried?
Also when i look at Jacksons ratio graph it says for hatchlings under 6 months old, but mine aint big enough to use the other one yet. my biggest one is 650mm and weighing 63g, and the other is 560mm and 43g. Does the weights sound ok?

Hi there,

The weights are good, in fact the smaller is a little on the heavy side but I don't worry about that too much personally in small tortoises. Their weight can go up and down depending on whats going in their mouths and whats coming out of the other end. Small tortoises will use that little excess towards growth.

Tortoises grow at different rates, I've got tortoises of the same age with one under 100 grams and the other over 200 now, both growing good and smooth, just at different rates.

If you follow this link theres a great calculator for the Jacksons ratio and a guide to the results

Hope this helps.
