soil & sand help with eyes
Posted: 07/06/2010 by Bushby

HI all, newbie here. Ok, so ive now got George in a suitable house after getting rid of the viv. Ive placed in his house 50/50 sand and soil. but im worried, as he has sand all over his eyes, when he woke up this morning I couldn't see his face at all, he was covered. Wont it damage his eyes?

I know that the other people who had George before us had woodchip in his house (xxl-large) I think this is what he is used to. I dont know what to do for the best.

Also is it ok to use shredded normal paper in his bed?

thanks, louise x Click and drag me down to the editor

Hi Louise
Sounds like your little one is having a ball by digging down!!!!
I have never had probelms with it affecting their eyes, as the substrate normally just falls off as it dries out. Is there any reason why the substarte is sticking to his face?

I think ive got a bit to much sand in there, so gonna put some more soil in. He has gone into his new house and has spent 6 hours today running around in a circuit! I dont think he likes his new home? I have him in a wire top rabbit indoor plastic cage, its large for him. He keeps on trying to escape, walking around the sides. I had to turn all his lights off just to get him to have a rest! It's red in colour and I have found him trying to eat the sides! maybe he thinks its food because of the colour? Its early days a guess.

When I change the substrate in my little ones indoor pen, she does the same, they seem to be getting their scent all over it so it is familiar.
He will settle down, and it is a good chance for you to see what needs to be moved to prevent them turning themselves upside down, or able to climb up and get themselves into trouble.
Sorry can't comment on the red Infra lights as I have never used them.
Hang on  in  there, at least he is investigating and not hiding in the corner, shows he is a bit fiesty.
