Tortoise center??
Posted: 29/05/2010 by kerryl

Hi we brought our Horsfield from a pet shop. We thought they were experts, as if you google tortoise for sale, they come up as the Tortoise center.  When we arrived at the store we were shocked, as there were two small vivs, one housing about 15 Horsfields and another with at least 20 Hermanns in, they were all clambering over each other as there wasn't enough room.  They were fed on cabbage and carrots.  I now know I should n't have brought him from them, as its customers like me who keep them in bussiness, but the one we now have, was sitting at the front following my finger and tapping on the glass, I just could nt leave him. On the web site the photographs are of tortoises outside on the grass but the lady tried to sell me a vivarium and said he would nt survive on a table, never mind outdoors. All of the Horsfields had bumpy shells and ours still has a problem with his eye.  I think/hope they do have the interests of the animals at heart so maybe a knowledgeable letter of care may help??  Also when we went to our local pet shop to buy hamster bedding I noticed that they too have a reptile section now, they have two Horsfields in a tiny Viv being fed pellets.  Maybe the same letter could go to them?

I make no comment on your posting , other than that I am pleased you have found a source of help in the TPG for potential problems with a tort. However, do be really careful about leaving open criticism, regarding traceable people or businesses, on the forum. You could potentially end up with litigation issues for yourself, rather than altering business practice. Good luck with your Horsefields, you will very soon be addicted!

Hi Kerryl, I have been searching the forum, and just revisited the entry I left you yesterday...I\am sorry it sounds so much like a lecture. I just wanted to be sure your good intentions didn't backfire on you.

ps...Go then, dare to tell me you are not obsessed with your beastie!Click and drag me down to the editor

No its not, sorry I don't think I have named anyone, should I mail you the name of the pet shop concerned?  It is a pet shop, that when googled comes up as a Tortoise center.  They have lots of other animals and as I said, I do think they have the best interests at heart just maybe need some staff training/guidance. Our tortoise is very bumpy and has eye problems that may have been avoided if they were better informed how to care for tortoises.

Hi yes I definitely am addicted already.  We have only had him for 2 weeks.  I did n't mean to name and shame anyone and I don't think you were lecturing, I just hadn't thought before I spokeClick and drag me down to the editor Sorry.  Its just a shame that tortoises can be kept like this, My tortoise loves being outside and he eats every weed that I offer him, but if I had followed advice and not found this site he would still be living in a vivarium eating iceberg lettuce cabbage carrots and tortoise pelletsClick and drag me down to the editor.  I think the pet shop staff have a genuine love of animals so may respond well to friendly advice.  Thank you

Kerry

Hi KerryClick and drag me down to the editor
These little shelled  people steal your heart honestly they do!!!!
Just reading your posts, sounds like this petshop may be willing to learn, which would be quite a break through if you could communicate with them. Can you download some care sheets and give them the website address of TPG and TT site so they can educate themselves? then at least you know you have tried to help. Anyway sounds like your little one is so lucky to have found you, and you seem to be learning lots already. Looking forward to hearing more news about your torty

After googling the pet shop again to find out their E mail address I have realised my mistake, the pet shop I brought our tortoise from has one key word the same as the Tortoise center, They are NOT the same sellers sorry! I had nt realised and when we looked at the web site it all looked fantastic they offered great advice and were very knowledgeable.  Unfortunately the pet shop we visited (thinking it was the one from the web site) is nothing to do with them and although they have the same name, they are quite a distance away.  So sorry again for the confusion I will email the pet shop which is nothing to do with the tortoise center and send them the care sheet.
