Which tortoise?
Posted: 26/05/2010 by herriotfan

Hi

I'm new on here and new to tortoises. I'm researching the tortoise before I get one to make sure I'd make a suitable owner. I would like a tortoise that has a calm, placid nature that is hardy and not too problematic. From my research, to date, this would suggest I'm looking at a Hermann's or Horsfield. Am I correct in thinking this and which of the two would you recommend and why? Thanks for your help.

Hi and Click and drag me down to the editor to the site, good to see you are doing your research first!!

Both torts as you say are ideal 'beginner' torts, as are Spur thigh!  One thing with Horsfields is that they have amazing characters, but they can climb and dig for England!  So you would have to make outdoor pens very secure.  Otherwise it is down to your personal preference, as their care is basically the same.

You may find that when you are wanting to buy your tort there is only one of the species available at that time, so that might make your mind up for you!!

Let us know how you get on, regards VivienneClick and drag me down to the editor

Hi I have recently brought my first little horsefield and as Vivienne says, he is a right little character!  We have had a few problems with Trevor and although I would choose him again, I definately would nt buy from a pet shop, he was kept in a viv, fed the wrong food and the advice I was given was wrong.  Lucky I too had researched this site and we are both a lot happier now. So my novice advice would be choose a reputable breader.  Good luck

Kerry
