Lighting/heat for a baby Leopard
Posted: 06/05/2010 by weeze

Hi,  I have had my four month old baby leopard for two weeks now, he is eating well and now weighing 72gm.  I am slightly concerned that I have not got the correct light set up.  I have a dayglo light a nightglo light and a uvb light, they are all set on timers so that they each come on at a different time,   the temp stays at about 22.  Are these lights enough for him?  I went to my local pet shop to ask about the different basking lights but they couldnt advise.  Should I get a basking light too, and if so there seem to be so many different strengths?  When I asked the breeder I got him from she said that they just had the dayglo and nightglo lights and to put him on the window sill if its sunny??????

Any advice would be very much appreciated.  He is living in a home made tortoise table.

Hi, this is way too cold for a leopard, they need a basking spot of around 30-35C, this can be achieved by using a normal 60watt spot bulb, I get mine from the supermarket or Wilkinsons.  The rest of the tort table should be around 20-22C.

You also need a good source of UV, a repti glo 10, or a combined heat and uv lamp.  Please read our care sheet on leopards for details on their care and husbandry http://www.tortoise-protection-group.org.uk/site/123.asp

What sort of housing do you keep him in, there are some examples of our members enclosures on the site under 'photo gallery' in the left hand column.

I hope this helps, please post any questions you may have, as leopards can be a challenge to keep!
