What type of Hermann?
Posted: 07/02/2010 by davesears

Hi

We are trying to find the sex and type of our Hermanns. Photographs was taken this afternoon while hibernation checks was made - not due out until 5th March.

Both had the bumpy shells when purchased from a private breeder in Jan 2008.

Stig was hatched on Aug 2006 and on the 29th Nov 09 weighed 193g and measured 98mm.

Stomp was hatched Aug 2007 and on the 29th Nov 09 weighed 211g and measured 99mm.

Breeder told me the temperature they was incubated Iwe should have a male and female - both look and act like males to me.

Breeder also said they are hermanni hermanni - well my limited knowledge they look like hermanni boettgeri. The type of hermann isnt a problem just would like to be sure what type we own.

appreciate any advice

thanks

Dave & Cathy

Hello there,

Looks to me that you do indeed have two male Testudo Hermanni Boettgeri.

Although tortoises do have temperature dependant sexing it would be impossible to incubate at a temperature that assures you a male and a female. You can incubate at a temperature at which you will obtain a mixture of males and females or at a temperature that produces more males (lower) or a temperature that produces more females (higher).
