Help Needed x x
Posted: 13/01/2010 by angeleyes

Hello everyone...I have just joined this site and think its brilliant. I am in need of some help and advice. I have been looking for a tortoise for some time now and to be honest I have only found pet shops and online sites that deliver them to your door? I really would prefer my money to go to a breeder or someone who rescues these lovely little creatures. If anyone has any ideas or contacts I would be much obliged. I am most interested in Horsfield Tortoises.

Kind regards

Nicky

Hi Nicky and welcome! I have a baby Horsfield, I got her from a breeder here on the TPG's list... Its under Buying a Tortoise...

We here do not advise buying a tort from any pet shop or online!! I can safely say my tort is healthy :)

Good luck with your tort Claire&Teddy

Hi Nicky, as Claire says we do have a breeders list, they often have baby torts available, here is the link http://www.tortoise-protection-group.org.uk/site/files/ApprovedbreedersJune2009.pdf .

We also occasionally have torts that need rehoming, if you are interested in rehoming a tort you can either keep checking in to see when one becomes available and apply at that time, or you can fill in an application form (see link on left entitled 'rehoming'') and we can keep that on file and let you know at that stage.

You are doing the right thing by not buying from petshops or online, we hear some right horror stories.Click and drag me down to the editor

Meanwhile you may want to read up further on horsfields, see our care sheet under the heading of 'The Tortoise' on the left again.  Any problems just let us know.

Hi

I have been looking at Horsfield Tortoises but to be honest that is only because they are the only ones I have ever seen. If you have any suggestions as to other breeds  you think would be suitable I would be greatful.

Regards

Nicky

Hi Nicky,

Iberas, Hermanns and Marginated tortoises are all good breeds to keep in the UK. They all hibernate, so you don't have to worry about providing enough space & heating to last over the winter months - which can be very expensive as they get larger.
