Getting a tortoise, need advise.
Posted: 01/12/2009 by Supertack

I'm getting a tortoise soon, thanks to this site I know all the things I'll be needing. The only thing I am yet to get is a tortoise, I've been looking at http://www.tortoisecentre.co.uk
Does anyone know anything about this place? Anyone bought from there? Are these imported tortoises?
And thing anyone knows would be great :P
Thanks

Wiltons/The Tortoise Centre are a very well known dealer who act as a go between and distribute imported tortoises to pet shops. I wouldn't touch them with an 8ft barge pole. Please don't purchase a tortoise from this place.

Have you looked at our breeders list at all please?:-

Hi,

I second what darren says PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM THIS PLACE!!! We have plently of reputable breeders on our list and even though you may have to travel to collect your tortoise you will benefit in the long run. Buying from a dealer will cause you no end of problems.

Thanks for that, I was worried about buying from there. I emailed a breeder from this site a few days ago but am awaiting reply. If anyone knows a site that represents a reputable breeder selling redfoots I'd love a link. Thanks again =]

I heard they do well inside, I think they look great and on the list of breeders the one selling redfoot's is closest to me. I'm aware these tortoises need a certain humidity, why do you ask? I Is there any perticular thing i need to know about these species?

Hi,

Yes they can do well if cared for in the correct manner. Redfoots are a tropical rain forest species which does not hibernate, they originate from south America and require a high humidity environment, they are also a fairly large tortoise when fully grown and can require a lot of space. Please take time to read our care sheets on them, you can find them here

http://www.tortoise-protection-group.org.uk/site/80.asp  you can click on the redfoot caresheet from here.

Hi I know your looking at a Redfoot Tortoise but just wanted to say I know of a lovely Horsfield/Russian breeder on the list I have bought from. I bought my Teddy from her in Nov and can confirm my Teddy as Healthy and CB in UK. When I was first looking I was taken in by the TC website, very impressive..No way did I want to contribute to the importation trade and no way did I want my tortoise posted like a piece of mail.If your interested look on the list on this site, Lisa in Kent. She also has Iberas too. Good luck Claire&Teddy
