First Hibernation
Posted: 23/11/2009 by Munster

Hi

Please can someone help?

We have two herman torts and want to hibernate them for the first time this year. They are both about 2 1/2 years old and one weights 241g & 109mm long, so he should be fine for hibination according to the Jackson Ratio, but the other is 150g and 94m long. Is he to small? i cant be to sure on the jackson ratio. He is winding down naturaly more than the other.

Please can someone advise if its ok for him to hibernate?

Oh they worry me so much. Click and drag me down to the editor

Hi Catherine,

Yes 150g is ok to hibernate but if this is their first time then id be inclined to only leave them for 8-10 weeks.

Hello Catherine and Jon,   My little Toto (Hermanns) is also only 160g but he is in his wind down period now too.    I keep a watchful eye on him every day to keep check on his progress but all he wants to do is sleep !!!    They are a worry for us aren't they !!!     We love them so much.    Click and drag me down to the editor      This is my first hibernation as well.   Speak to you again soon... love Marilyn. x

Hi Marilyn,

We quite look forward to our lot going down as we struggle this time of year to find food, but after Christmas we're always itching to get them up again:-)
