Hi
I had this problem with one that I brought. There has been problems with megeray and it has been solved by making sure that the bulb holder is a ceramic holder. Of course it could also be that it is overheating in the area that you have it, but I guess you have checked that already?
Hope that helps
Jane

Hi Jane

Thanks for the reply. The megaray is in a ceramic holder. I dont think it can be overheating in the place  I have it, but it is very odd.It just goes on and off all day long!.

Hi Bigal
I had to return my bulb a few times. There has been a problem regarding the wattage, where did you get it from?

Hi

These lamps do seem to need a 'bedding in' period sometimes, I had a Megaray which flickered and switched off when I first got it, but after a week or so it settled down.  It may be worth just checking it is firmly screwed into the fitting, but to be on the safe side, I would consider contacting the person you bought it from and letting them know you are having problems with it now, and see what they say.

All the best

\Hi have a look at Kimbos reptile suppliers, just type in ceramic holder and it should show you one http://www.kimbosreptileworld.co.uk/  Basically its the same as a normal plastic bulb holder, but made of ceramic to withstand the higher heat.Click and drag me down to the editor

Hi

I have the MegaRay 120w Bulb and zoo med shade, I have it set high as possible in the rabbit cage. The temps are reaching 40c. Too HOT! I have emailed Kimbos, will wait for reply from them. But in the meantime any ideas on other bulbs? Is there a 100w MegaRay bulb? I didn't see one on the website:(... Teddy seems to know its too hot and doesnt sit directly under the bulb, he sits to the side.I am worried!

Hi Claire,

I'm not sure whether Darren has any of the 100w bulbs in atm, no doubt he will get back to you. 40deg is too hot for small tortoises. Kimbos do lamp stand holders which would enable you to lift the lamp higher, though it would mean re-designing the cage or doing away with the cage completely. They are located at the bottom of this link. I've recently purchased a couple here and they are fully adjustable.

Hi There

Thanks for your reply, I have moved the lamp now, its placed outside the cage clipped to a shelf using the clamp that came with the shade. Its better but the reading is now 26c..I am aiming for 28c, I have moved it about and still cant get a slightly higher temp. I am going to call Darren on Monday morning to talk about the clamp, theres a metal notchet that looks like it can move slightly but its tough. Not sure if it does move though. I had tried many times to call today, but am gettting the answering machine. I am surprised its closed on a Saturday :(  Am  really wanting to sort this out now as its really bothering me, It wont beat me! hehe

Hi

I have recently moved my lamp(MegaRay) from inside the cage to outside as I was having temperature issues. Now I have the temp right I am finding the lamp is going off itself. I noticed this last night when I went into my dining room. The bulb was glowing a blue colour, which I thought was odd. Had not seen this before when it was inside the cage.I turned it off thinking "Oh Christ" the bulb has broke!! My heart sank at £50 a time I cant keep buying these lol. Well After a little bit of time off it turned on as normal. Phew! I wiped my brow with relief! Is this normal with this bulb?

Hi Claire, you say you have moved it outside the cage, does this mean that the face of the lamp is a couple of inches above the bars of the cage?  Or have you removed the bars.  If you still have the cage bars in place it maybe that the lamp is overheating from the reflection of the heat of the bars.

Also, I have read a couple of posts over the last couple of weeks saying their lamps keep going off, but it has been suggested they do need 'bedding in', so eventually it should stop going on and off.  If you are concerned give Darren at Kimbo's (I think that's where you purchased it from) a ring and see what he suggests.

Also another point with these lamps is that you must not touch the glass of the bulb with your hands as you leave a deposit on them which will eventually burn the lamp out.  Only handle it with a lint free cloth.
