Stolen Tortoise
Posted: 20/09/2009 by Dexieii

Stolen from his enclosure in the Walmer area of Deal Kent on the 4th September 2009, Taz is a male 7yr old Hermann's. He has a smooth and distinctively marked carapace and his plastron measures approximately 6". He is a confident and friendly chap and very much missed by his tortie companions and his devastated family.

No response so far to an appeal in the paper or to the flyers and posters distributed. Am currently contacting all schools in the area as the theft is believed to be opportunist which could possibly indicate a child (I don't publicise the fact I have torts).

Please spread the word and help find Taz.

Hi Eileen,

I really hope you find Taz soon. Have you contacted John Hayward from the National Theft Register? You can either email him on mailto:jh@ntr.supanet.com or call him on 01869 325699 (home) or 07802 404929 (mobile). He holds lists of all the lost/found tortoises nationwide.

Good luck

Thank you all, still no news at all Click and drag me down to the editor

I contacted John Hayward as soon as I realised Taz was missing, I have also contacted everyone I know in the tortoise world, everyone has been very helpful but to no avail as yet.

One thing I have noticed in my search is that any previously 'found' tortoises handed into our local vets just seem to be either given to the person that takes in local injured wildlife, or to someone they know who keeps torts. No-one locally that I have spoken to seemed aware of the theft register, so everyone please tell your vets and local petshops about John Haywards register, the more people that know about it the more successful it will be.

I am totally gobsmacked... missing since the 4th September and despite all hope fading as the winter weather took hold Taz miraculously reappeared this morning! We had dug the entire enclosure over so methodically, and the weather in early September was still so mild, that I was totally convinced that Taz had been stolen, we even had the police round and an appeal in the newspaper! I am very thankful to our foster dog Effie who, despite not being able to get into the enclosure, attracted our attention to the area where Taz was found by making her customary squeals of excitement at something new.

I've read the stories before (and have just read Lorraine's good news also) but I was convinced we had thoroughly searched the entire secure enclosure and was sure that I wouldn't be that lucky, but I was Click and drag me down to the editor

Welcome home Taz, we've missed you xxx
