120W or 100W
Posted: 18/09/2009 by kerryjcarl

Hi

would like to purchase a Megaray combined light for my tortoises, have been advised 120w, but am concerned it may be too hot, have been using 100w heat lamp previously, they are hermanns and 3 and 5 years old.  The cage is just over 3ft in length, height 17ins, width 17 ins, I just don't want any burns or dehydration.

Hi Kerry,

I use the powersun mercury vapour 160w flood lamps and have never had any problems with these, there is no reason why they should burn themselves if these are suspended over the enclosure and regular bathing will ensure they do not dehydrate.

Hi.  I am now using the 120W megaray which has taken over from the 100W which they don't make now.  I'd agree it runs a bit hotter but the UVB output is really good so I think we can just have it raised up a bit more to get the right temperature and there is still a good amount of UVB.  I'm personally in favour of offering a place to hide which is more humid as well as one that isn't.  This may help the tortoise manage any dehydration problem (as well as the bathing)

Ozric, Hello

I wanted to ask you, What type of holder and shade are you using with the Megaray? I have looked on Kimbos, but me being me lol I cant see what I am looking for.Could you tell me please what u have and a pic would be beneficial too :)Thanks...Also how much all this comes to, as I need an idea of costs of the combination setup.

Hi Claire,

Just about any of these will do:-

The only thing you have to check is the wattage. If you are going to use a 120w lamp then the holder must be 120w rated or above.

If you click on the photos on this link it will tell you the maximum wattage lamp you can use.

This holder:-

for example will take any lamp up to 250w

Hi
I have the 120w MegaRay bulb, The temp is too high. I have it positioned inside the cage as high as it can go. Temps running at 35-40c. My little one doesnt sleep or sit directly under it, thank god! He sits to the side of the centre. Any ideas?
