Hello there

My Hermanns tortoise was not issued with a certificate when I purchased him from the reptile shop, they said they would send it in the post, this is at least 2 yrs ago! I still have a receipt for him, should I do something about this?

Hi Kerry, I had saved a site that explains to you about certificates on Tortoises, here it is,
http://www.tortoisecentre.co.uk/tortoise%20law.htm
Very interesting!

HI Claire,

Wiltons would need to be very knowledgeable with regards to importation as they import and supply tortoises to many pet shops. I personally wouldn't advise anyone to purchase a tortoise from this place at all.

This may help - it's slightly more in-depth though.

ooo goodness, am so sorry. I would never suggest somewhere that is involved in the importation of Tortoises. I didn't know, so am sorry. I have already decided that I will when I get one of course, go to a breeder.

Thanks for the link, I will take a look :)

Hi Claire,

That's perfectly OK - no need to apologise at all :-)

It's very easy to get the wrong impression about Wiltons. I've mailed & spoken to a number of people who, after visiting their shop, were very surprised to find they import tortoises at all and thought they bred all their "stock" and were very annoyed to find they had purchased imported tortoises:-(

I know how committed you are to come by tortoises that hatched and are cared for in the UK. It's actually very refreshing to come across someone who has taken so much time to get it right before acquiring tortoises:-)

Best Regards
Darren

I am absolutely shocked that pet shops allow this to happen. It must be stopped!! My local pet shop in the retail park have Tortoises, kept in Vivs too! :( My eyes have been really opened to this activity! It's heartbreaking! Before I came across this site I had no idea at all that this was happening.
I'm not someone who would rush into buying a animal, I have to know what's involved. I am owner of 8 cats whom I love like my children. I am known as the cat lady lol, bearing in mind that i'm 34 and most "cat ladies" are of the maturer age. I've had cats all my life, my parents always had lots so I guess I inherited the need to have lots of cats :), most of them I have taken in and found lost!
I have to thank you guys for this site, if it wasn't for you guys I'd have no idea! I have learnt so much!, I had no idea what was involved, but I am so looking forward to becoming a proud owner of a little tortoise soon. But only when ive done my homework lol
Thank you, looking forward to learning so much more :)Claire
