Hi, I have just gone through the motions of uploading a picture onto this message and it all went ok.     Perhaps you were either timed out, it only allows you 90seconds to add the picture, or the photos may be too big.  Unless as you say your internet browser isnt responding.  Please do keep trying as we would love to see the pictures of him Click and drag me down to the editor If you continue to have trouble, send your pictures to us and we will upload them for you.

Glad you managed to suss it out!  I've had a look and looks to be male! To correctly ID him though is there any chance you could take a pic of the underneath (plastron) and looking from the top down, and one from the sid angle to see how pyramided he is?

Have you made him a temporary home and know what to feed him? For information here is a link to the Hermanns care sheet  http://www.tortoise-protection-group.org.uk/site/files/Hermanns%20care%20sheet%20May%202008.pdf  This will be ok to follow until we can give you a definite ID. If you have trouble loading the pictures send them to me and we can upload them/Id him for you.

His pyramiding is making it slightly difficult for us to ID him properly, but he is looking like he could possibly be a hermanns.  We will be able to give you a better idea once we see some photos of his underneath shell (plastron) and his rear area showing his tail.  we are looking to see if there is a spike at the end of it.

Well done Click and drag me down to the editor you're doing a great job in the short time since you found him.  The table top looks great, what substrate are you using, is it sand.  The most natural substrate is a 50/50 mix of topsoil/play sand (cheap from B&Q).

With regard to food, its best to stay clear of lettuce (no nutrional value), tomatoes (causes imbalance to the gut flora) and broccoli (part of the brassica family, stop the absorption of calcium), best food for them is weeds and plants from the garden, eg dandelions, plantains, pansies, petunia, lavatera.  A good site to look at for weeds (shows pics) is http://www.tlady.clara.net/TortGuide/Diet.htm#plantlist

Just need to see a clear shot of the plastron and tail area to see if there are any spurs or hook on tail to give a good ID.

ok thankyou :) yeh it is a mix of sand and soil i think i got it from a garden centre and its just called tortoise substrate, ill have a look and see what it contains to double check. should i just put weeds in there for now then and hope that he starts eating them? i will take some more pics later

Hi (sorry dont know your name!!)

Yes put the weeds in, always wash them, especially when picking them from public places.  They really love flowers, I give mine roses, dandelion, mallow and pansy flowers. You will need to sprinkle limestone flour and nutrobal onto them, to make sure he get the supplements he needs.  This is probably why he is so pyramided because he has been fed an incorrect diet without the supplements, also he probably hasnt been given the correct lighting.  He will need a basking lamp (a reflector spot bulb from wilko's) and a uvb strip light (Reptisun 10's are the best) or you can get a combined heat and uv lamp called a Megaray which provides both.

Check to see what the substrate is, if its too sandy he might eat it with his food and compact inside him.

But you are doing a fantastic job with him

thankyou :D we've got him a uvb lamp i think its 125? whatever that means, haha, he seems pretty fast during the day so i think its doing the trick! weve got nutrobal as the garden centre recommended it and also something else called cy something?! its also a white powder in a clear plastic pot with a white screw on lid!
