Tortoises and outings
Posted: 16/08/2009 by minniechops

This might possibly sound like a silly question but what do people think about tortoises going for outings. I ask because at the back of my house we have a play park and field and today me and my daughter had a picnic around there and we took our two horsefield tortoises with us. They appeared to enjoy the new experience. Which made a wonder if they might enjoy going to other places. What do people think.

Hi Zoe, Personally a I think it is a bit dangerous, it would only take a split second for them to disappear if you turned away for any reason, also you could not be sure an inquisitive dog would not find them attractive. If a large dog on the loose came running over, your priority would be your child, and that would leave your torts unguarded. They are safer in their enclosure at home.

About 2 years ago someone took their tortoise to a park and lost it, also some people have taken theirs on holiday and they have wandered off and never seen again.

Hi Zoe,

No this certainly is not a good idea. Tortoises do not take well to change and need a safe secure environment. Also a public place could have all sorts on the ground including dog mess etc.

Keep them at home where they will be safer and happier.

It depends really, if it was a crowded place then it is a bad idea, but if there is a relatively small amount of people and other animals, why not.
