Bushes for enclosure
Posted: 14/07/2009 by tortoise7

Hi Everyone
We are doing Molly's area again (as you do) and I wonder if I could get some help from you guys with names of bushes that would be good to use. I have hebes but wanted to put some different ones in?
Thanks
Jane

HI Jane

Lavender, cistus (rock rose), bay tree,
oregano & thyme provide an attractive and tortoise friendly environment. None are poisonous, yet tortoises are not generally interested in eating them. Sedums, campanula and other edible plants can also be used but, from experience, they don't last very long!!
As a general rule, avoid anything that grows from a bulb.

Thanks Darren
They sound like good choices.. The area we are doing for her is to keep her interested and to provide lots of hidey holes (This is a Jane's word not to be found in the dictionary) so I think you have given me some lovely choices. Thanks for your suggestions, I will post when we have finished it

Hi, Rosemary is also suitable and generally isn't eaten.  Buddleia is OK but maybe too big.  Cotoneaster is reckoned to be alright too.  For smaller plants, sage, thyme and marjoram are all good.  The Rock Roses are very nice, I just discovered those.  Thrift builds into a big tuft eventually and though the flowers and the thin leaves are edible I find the torts don't bother with it much.
